1979 Omega Speedmaster 145.022 ST 78. This is the first generation of the post moon landing Speedmaster and the first to debut the 861 Lemania movement. This watch is in excellent condition, with minimal normal/infrequent wear marks on the bezel with a fabulous patina emerging on the markers and hands. All watch and chronograph functions are perfect and crisp with a clean movement. Watch has its original 633/1171 bracelet with full links --perfect if you have a large wrist.
This is the last of the "affordable" true vintage Moon watches (the previous generation typically start well above $6K). The famed BMW M1 had just made its debut on the year of this watch's production!
What makes this watch cool: The Speedmaster is a watch of true historical significance --It was not originally designed for space exploration. Instead, it was introduced in 1957 as a sport and racing chronograph following on from the early chronographs of the 1920s and 1930s. The Speedmaster became NASA's official watch choice for the manned space program in the late 60's and ultimately became the first watch worn on the moon by Buzz Aldren in the famed Apollo space mission.
