A fine Edwardian silver pocket watch retailed by Kendal & Dent of London, one of Britain's most respected makers of chronometers and precision timepieces. Dating to approximately 1900–1910, this attractive open-face watch combines a quality Swiss-made movement with a beautifully preserved silver case and a particularly unusual inner case engraving.
The most distinctive feature is the rare cuvette inscription:
"J.B. Dent & Sons, Watch & Chronometer Makers to the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty and the British Government, London."
While Dent's association with the Admiralty is well documented, this specific engraving is seldom encountered and adds considerable historical interest to the watch. It serves as a reminder of the firm's long-standing reputation for supplying precision instruments during Britain's great maritime era.
The silver case remains in lovely condition and retains its Swiss silver hallmarks, including the bear marks, along with a large vacant cartouche to the reverse. The original white enamel dial is equally well preserved, showing no cracks, chips, or repairs. Traditional Roman numerals, blued steel hands, and a subsidiary seconds dial complete the classic Edwardian aesthetic.
The watch is fitted with a Swiss-made manual wind movement which is currently running well and keeping time. The original crystal is also present and in good condition.
Accompanying the watch is its original Kendal & Dent fitted presentation box. The box shows expected wear from age and use but is an increasingly scarce survival that complements the watch nicely.
Quality silver pocket watches of this period are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Many have unfortunately been lost over the years as silver cases were scrapped for bullion value, making complete and original examples such as this ever more desirable to collectors.
