HAMILTON US Navy Military comparing watch

Hamilton 2974B US Navy Military  Comparing Watch is a beautiful example of a 17 Jewel pocket watch made for the American Navy during WWII in the 40’s.  Hamilton was well known for its high grade and accurate movements which were deemed among the best at the time.  This is a high grade nickel ¾ plate movement with a lever escapement and micrometer regulator. The movement features a hacking function, whereby when you pull out the winder to set the hands, the balance will stop therefore enabling you to synchronize with other timepieces.  The sparkling movement is decorated with straight line damascening, is in near mint condition and is signed Hamilton Watch Co, USA, 17 jewels 2974B, adjusted temp & 3 positions #2K12xxx.

 The excellent case is base metal open face and has a screw off back and bezel.  The back of case is engraved “US NAVY BU SHIPS COMPARING WATCH, MARK 1 MOD O #14499-1944, Hamilton Watch Co. Lancaster, Pa. The circle with an N enclosed stands for US Naval Observatory.    Very mild wear on this  ex military case.

A Comparing Watch should have a dust cover under the back cover to protect the movement and many of these are missing.  However, this fine example is complete with the original dust cover intact.

 The white porcelain dial is perfect and has blue steel hands, black bold Arabic  numbers and is signed Hamilton. The watch is stem wind and stem set and is 51mm diameter. 

 What is a Naval Military COMPARING WATCH? 

Every marine chronometer came with a comparing watch.  The comparing watch was synchronized to the ship’s 

Marine Chronometer and the comparing watch was used by the Navigator or his assistant, called the Quartermaster, when they left the bridge to take measurements.  It would be carried throughout the ship to ensure that all clocks on board were precisely set to exact same time. Therefore a very necessary piece of military equipment. 

 This is a rare and  fine WW11  military watch and will highlight any collection.
