An exquisite half-hunter silver pocket watch by J.W. Benson of London, a distinguished and highly regarded maker. This timepiece is in excellent working condition and boasts a fascinating provenance. Fully hallmarked for London, 1918, it was presented by the esteemed firm Handley Page—renowned manufacturers of military bomber aircraft for the Royal Air Force, including the legendary Halifax bomber with a small inscription inner dust cover.
The watch houses the celebrated Ludgate movement, beautifully engraved is a dedication TO HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN and bearing the inscription “Ludgate Hill, London.” Recently serviced, the movement runs smoothly and keeps accurate time.
The top features a robust action with a crisp logo, and a side pin mechanism allows for easy hand setting. Both crystals are intact, and the pristine white dial showcases elegant black numerals, blued steel hands, and a small seconds subdial. The half-hunter design includes a double-swell seconds hand , enabling the time to be read without opening the case. Movement is fully signed by maker and marked "Best London Make".
Finely engraved scrollwork initials adorn the back, adding a touch of personal charm. The case measures 50 mm in diameter and weighs a substantial 122 grams—a remarkable piece of horological history, combining craftsmanship, heritage, and functionality.
J W Benson originated in 1847 and was founded by James William Benson and Samuel S. Benson who were regarded as one of London’s most prestigious retail jewellers during Victorian times. They also manufactured their own movements and their company boasted a clientele of British and European Kings, Queens and Princes including of course Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales.
