1969 Omega Speedmaster Professional Ref. 145.022-69

A Personal Legacy of the Moon Era

A rare and evocative "Transitional" Speedmaster, combining the most desirable vintage design traits with a tangible connection to the year that changed horology forever.

The Ref. 145.022-69 is the ultimate "Year of the Moon" watch. Produced in 1969, it captures the Speedmaster at its most pivotal moment—transitioning from the early 1960s aesthetic to the robust configuration that would define the Moonwatch for half a century. This example is a true survivor, boasting the depth of a "Step Dial" and the historical weight of a "Pre-Moon" case back.

The Design & Patina

This watch is a masterclass in honest aging. It features the sought-after "Step Dial," where the outer minute track sits on a lower plane, creating a three-dimensional effect that was phased out shortly after this reference. The tritium hour markers and the original handset have aged in perfect harmony, developing a rich, even custard patina that only decades of natural aging can produce.

The watch is fitted with its original "Dot Over Ninety" (DON) bezel. While many of these were replaced during servicing over the years, this original insert has been preserved. It bears a slight, honest chip in the black paint between the 5 and 6 o'clock positions—a minor "battle scar" that serves as a badge of authenticity.

The Mechanics

Under the hood is the venerable Omega Calibre 861. Introduced in late 1968, this movement was designed for the high-vibration environments of space travel. It offers a higher beat rate and increased durability over the earlier 321, while maintaining the iconic manual-wind ritual. The movement in this example is remarkably clean, showcasing the copper-toned plating and intricate cam-actuated chronograph architecture.

The Provenance

The "Pre-Moon" Hippocampus case back carries a crisp, personalized engraving: "F.H.P. JUNE 1970." Far from being a detraction, this engraving is a gift to the collector. It provides a "time-stamped" provenance, confirming exactly when this watch was originally presented. In the world of vintage watches, knowing a piece was cherished as a significant gift often explains its high level of preservation—it was a prized possession, not a daily tool, ensuring the case lines remain sharp and the dial remains pristine.
