1882 J.W. Benson Victorian Silver Swing-Out Pocket Watch + Original Box

A fine silver J.W. Benson pocket watch dating to 1882, complete with its original fitted Benson box and winding key. This well-preserved Victorian example carries the name of one of London’s best-known watchmakers and retailers, with the movement signed by J.W. Benson and bearing references to the firm’s royal warrants to the Queen and the Prince of Wales.

J.W. Benson was one of Victorian London’s most respected watch and clock firms, renowned for fine English timepieces and royal warrants to Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales. Today, Benson watches are valued for their craftsmanship and strong connection to British horological history.

The white enamel dial remains clean and attractive, with bold black Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds at six and gold-coloured hands. There are a couple of very light hairlines, though these are difficult to detect with the naked eye and do not detract significantly from the overall presentation.  The dial has very minor edge cracking at the extreme perimeter, concealed beneath the outer case when assembled and not visible when in use.

The clean gilt movement was serviced just over a year ago and is running well, taking a full wind. The watch is housed in a solid silver swing-out case, with the dial and movement mounted in a hinged inner ring that opens away from the outer case for winding, setting and access to the movement. Full London hallmarks confirm the date of 1882, while the case remains in very good condition both inside and out, with engine-turned sides and a plain cartouche.

The inner cover is engraved for a previous owner, R. A. Selby of Bridgend, South Wales, adding a pleasing element of period provenance. Presented in its original J.W. Benson fitted box, marked with the firm’s Ludgate Hill address.
